“Knauf” sound insulation and fire resistance systems

Modern Roofing

Within designing and construction process of any buildings and structures, architects and engineers face noise reduction and fire safety task. Both work space and living space should be arranged for people to work peacefully and safely. Modern technologies building materials are necessary to achieve these results in the building. The world’s leading companies permanently care for the development of the environment and make relevant solutions.

The German company Knauf is famous for the production of plasterboards, however, their list of construction materials is diverse and meets the world highest standards.

Sound insulation

The sound insulation and sound absorption are marked in acoustics. The sound insulation is necessary in the buildings and structures when the sound should be shielded between rooms and the absorption should take place when the sound as well as echo inside the room should be disappeared.

Knauf plasterboard walls system creates a good insulating layer reducing twice more the noise from the neighboring housing or work space rather than the wall system built with traditional blocks.

To compare, if we take a 10-centimeter block wall plastered from both sides, its sound shielding coefficient will be 35 dB. And Knauf 10-centimeter wall with the 5-centimeter profile, 5-centimeter cotton and two plasterboards on both sides shields 52 dBs. If the traditional wall had the same decibels as Knauf 10-centimeter wall,  it must have been 25-26 centimeters thick, though in this case the free space is lost as well as  the building becomes heavier. 1 sq.m of the traditional 10-centimeter wall weighs up to 300 kilograms, but Knauf wall does not even reach 50 kilos. Accordingly, the traditional wall is considered to be dangerous from the seismic point of view,  but Knauf not. 95% of our outer walls are built with bricks, the composed wall is only 5% and 99% in the United States”, said Giorgi Japaridze, Director General at Knauf.

As for the sound absorbing acoustic ceiling of Knauf, it has also a decorative purpose. Its boards having different shaped holes create an aesthetic beauty.

The absorption of sound by Knauf ceiling board depends on the size of the holes and the distance between them. When  talking, the sound wave collides with the wall and then goes up, absorbed by Knauf ceiling and does not go down. Therefore, we will easily get the absorbed sound that we will feel without echo”, – was noted by Giorgi Japaridze.

Fire resistance

Fire safety is one of the most important factors in buildings and structures, and incorrectly selected materials create  big risks  as well as fatal results.

Knauf fire resistant ceiling has its classification and can withstand fire from 30 minutes to two hours. Everything is comparable, so we should discuss an example to figure out the advantages:

The block wall cannot be destroyed after the fire, but the fire violates its internal structure, accordingly, taking into account all construction rules, it must be destroyed and rebuilt. In the case when the wall built with blocks is ruined during the fire, it may damage people. In our case, Knauf wall will be heated to 100 degrees in half an hour, and within 45 minutes the cotton inside will start to disappear, melt, and finally the wall will be burned, but no one will be damaged as a result of ruining”, – explains Knauf Director General in Georgia.

Knauf also has a fire resistant board that never burns and its structure is not damaged . The inside of the board is reinforced by glass fibers and is covered with a special fiberglass. As specialists say, one cannot feel the heat during the fire when touching  25-millimeter thick boards. The similar board was first applied in Tbilisi airport tower, followed by Kutaisi airport. Currently it is applied by various elite hotels and shopping centers.

Plaster and similar boards comprise 90% of the US construction market. The walls in this world’s leading country are not built at all with blocks and bricks. Today, the construction sector of Georgia is still using old technologies in construction, block wall being one of the examples, that has long been considered to be already last century history for developed countries.
